Tour Details

The “Royal Route” was the historic path stretching from the Florian Gate, the main entrance to the city, to the Royal Castle on Wawel Hill. In the past, all royal motorcades, diplomats, and illustrious guests crossed Kraków from north to south along this road. Today, it serves as a popular tourist route featuring key landmarks such as the Church of St. Mary, the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall, the University Quarter, the Franciscan Monastery, St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, and Wawel Hill.

Here is the itinerary of the route:

Pijarska Street and St. Florian’s Gate

In bygone times, kings returning from victorious battles, foreign diplomats, and illustrious guests entered Kraków through this gate. Today, St. Florian’s Gate stands as one of the definitive symbols of the city, welcoming tourists as they arrive.

Florianska Street

As one of the most famous and exemplary streets in Kraków, it leads visitors straight to the heart of the city. Centuries ago, it hosted the solemn coronation and funeral processions of Polish monarchs. Today, it tempts passersby with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and clubs.

The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny)

This is a place defined by superlatives: it is the most important public space in Kraków, the most expansive medieval market square in Europe, and the location that gathers the city’s most distinctive hallmarks. The square features several major historical sites:

  • Sukiennice (The Cloth Hall): A pearl of Renaissance architecture and Kraków’s oldest commercial center, making it one of the most important elements of the city’s architectural heritage.

  • The Town Hall Tower: Standing 70 meters (230 feet) tall with 110 stone steps to climb, this 700-year-old tower houses old executioner’s dungeons and remains the only remnant of the original city hall.

  • St. Adalbert’s Church: A small, unimposing church that stands askew on the vast square. This edifice is a relic of very distant times, built long before the official chartering of the city. It was placed intentionally at a historic crossroads where, according to tradition, the Bohemian cleric St. Adalbert used to preach.

St. Mary’s Basilica

Located in the very center of Kraków, this church holds over eight centuries of history. It is famous for its grand high altar carved by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz), the traditional hourly bugle call, and the star-strewn murals by Jan Matejko that cover the vaulting.

Grodzka Street

This is one of the oldest streets in Kraków and forms a major part of the official, historical path leading from the city gates to the castle.

St. Peter and Paul Church

This was Kraków’s first church inspired by the sacred architecture of the Roman Baroque. Its magnificent stone façade and masterly designed dome provide a key element in the city’s overall panorama.

St. Andrew’s Church

As one of Kraków’s oldest churches, it captivates viewers with its austere Romanesque form, which contrasts sharply with the later Baroque spires on its towers. The interior surprises visitors with its lavish Baroque and Rococo furnishings.

Kanonicza Street

An exceptionally picturesque little street where every single house boasts a long, rich history that often reaches back to the first half of the 14th century.

Wawel Hill

The final destination of the route, encompassing the historic Royal Castle and the Cathedral.

Krakow’s Old Town is one of the most famous places in Europe and even the world. Take a guided tour along the traditional Royal Route through the Market Square to Wawel to the former seat of Polish monarchs
